TASC, The After-School Corporation, is a national nonprofit organization based in New York City. We work in New York, New Orleans, Baltimore and the nation to change public policy and direct sustainable public funding to support expanded learning opportunities for all kids. The most disadvantaged kids in this country also have the fewest opportunities to keep learning when the conventional school day and year end. We are dedicated to reversing that inequality and giving every student a fighting chance to succeed.

We developed and are implementing ExpandED Schools, which offer a promising framework for educators and communities to reinvent public schools, especially those that are struggling to fully deliver on the promise of public education. Traditional schools—in session for roughly six hours a day, 180 days a year—were designed for life a century ago. ExpandED Schools prepare 21st century learners to succeed by giving kids roughly three more hours a day of learning time and a wider range of opportunities to learn.

Based on school-community partnerships and proven practices, this is a cost effective and feasible approach to closing opportunity and achievement gaps even in difficult economic times.

What qualifies TASC to lead in expanding learning opportunities?

As of the end of the 2010-2011 school year, TASC has:

» Helped 376,000 New York City kids

» Supported 486 New York City public schools

» Partnered with 328 community & cultural organizations & colleges

» Trained 16,000 community members to work in schools

Founded in 1998, TASC was the first nonprofit organization to set out to build a citywide K-12 after-school system. We created a model for daily after-school programs that community organizations operate in partnership with schools, offering kids sports, arts, academic help and support for their healthy social and emotional development.

We commissioned an independent multi-year evaluation which showed that TASC programs demonstrably improve achievement, school attendance and enthusiasm among learners. By helping to define the elements of high-quality after-school and summer learning programs, we helped give rise to the movement to expand learning time and give disadvantaged students in particular more time and a wider range of opportunities to learn.

With TASC programs as the model, New York City built the largest municipally-funded after-school system in the nation.
